Phillip fulfills two roles.

The first is Don Pedro, the cupid-playing friend of Benedick (in Spires of Stone, the loyal brother of Ben).

The second is purely unintentional on his part. Phillip is technically the one responsible for Claude thinking he sees Hannah betraying him, due to the photograph of Marie.

In the play, Don Jon deliberately sets up a situation where Claudio will "see" Hero being unfaithful, when it's really Margaret with another man. Phillip would never do such a thing on purpose.

Since his character is more in line with Don Pedro's good heart, his name hearkens to Don Pedro's rather than Don Jon's.
